Purely Skinful Handmade Essentials (https://www.purelyskinfulhandmadeessentials.com/) was established in 2015 by Linda Janes. The brand has a wide focus, offering shaving soap, pre and post shave, bath soap, hair care, face care and foot care. The artisan utilizes several base offerings with her shaving soap, including beef tallow, bear tallow and deer tallow. The overarching focus is on providing quality products that leverage natural ingredients. Purely Skinful can be purchased direct and also at Stone Field Shaving Co. (https://stonefieldshave.com/). Huge thanks to Pottertons, a long time channel subscriber for sending me this sample for review.
Excalibur is a blend of blood orange, bergamot, litsea, patchouli, black pepper and palmarosa. This is a classic citrus forward scent with an earthy dry down. The citrus forward notes are bitter with a hint of sweetness and the earth tones balance this out effectively. I detect a hint of spice from the black pepper as well. While I do not love this scent, I also do not dislike it. Mrs. Ruds does not care for this scent, likely because of the earthy dry down. Strength of scent is mid off the sample and remains mid once lathered. Similar smells from wet shaving are: Dr. Jon's Blood Oath and Catie's Bubbles Maggard Meetup.
Purely Skinful uses beef tallow for this offering (they also have a deer tallow base and a bear tallow base). The ingredients are listed as: Hydrogenated Soybean Oil, Beef Tallow, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter) Fruit, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Lanolin, Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe) Leaf Juice, Potassium Hydroxide, Sodium Hydroxide, Parfum (Fragrance), Tussah Silk. The soap is on the firmer side of the spectrum. Thirst of the soap base is as you’d expect and not overly needy of water. As you dial in the lather you will know you have hit the sweet spot when you have a lather that feels like whipped cream. Slickness of the soap is good. It provides enough glide to keep the user safe from drag or the edge skipping, but is short of the slickest soaps by a noticeable gap. Post shave is very good however. The skin is left soft and smooth and without any drying once the lather is rinsed away. Purely Skinful’s beef tallow soap base ranks in with a ShaveScore of 88. For similar soap base performance, I recommend: Bufflehead Soap Co. or Siliski Soaps.
